Right before Girl Wonder was born, I made sure to visit Skin Deep to find a diaper cream that had a “safe score” rating for it’s ingredients, just to have it handy in case it was needed. Not surprisingly, many “popular” brands didn’t have a rating I was comfortable with. Talc and powder were both items I didn’t purchase due to current findings that it can get in the air and therefore into little lungs.
Thankfully, Girl Wonder has never had a really bad diaper rash, but she does suffer from minor irritation, so I’ve used diaper cream on occasion.
Over the past few weeks, though, I’ve had to opportunity to try out a product that has to be the “safest” and “eco-friendly” way to take care of diaper issues. Bummas were developed by parents who’s own son suffered greatly from diaper rashes.
Bummas cloths can simply be used with water to wipe little bums and just as they are to dry them. This eliminates the need to go through hundreds (if not thousands!) of commercial wipes, and therefore never puts delicate skin in contact with synthetic chemicals and keeps non-biodegradable wipes out of landfills. Bummas can also be used with little boys to block “surprise squirts”!
Bummas are:
- 100% cotton
- soft cloths made of naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial terry cloth
- 5″ x 7″ in size.
- won’t pill, shrink, or fade.
- come in colorful themed combinations with 10 in a pack.
- will not shrink or fade.
- are made in California, USA.
After two weeks of using Bummas, I saw a noticeable difference in Girl Wonder’s irritations. Who knew that something so simple could make such a huge difference.

I wish we’d had these eight years ago when we were dealing with diaper rash after diaper rash after diaper rash with our younger girl.
These are cute! Can I ask just one question? What makes these different from regular old wash cloths? I couldn’t find the answer on their page…
I tend to recycle my old (i.e. broken down, nice and soft) wash clothes for use with the boy. I always keep a few in my tote and then just toss ‘em in the wash at the end of an outing. Great for everything from sticky sucker messes to dirt diving to diaper disasters!
Good question – it could be that Bummas are made with antimicrobial terry cloth.
Great idea to carry them with you for “mess ups”!
How cool–I like how they are packaged, too–a great gift for my future mama friends!
Wow, that’s awesome! I hadn’t thought of anything like this.
I’m wondering about the diaper rash cream rating thing – I just use a popular brand. What’s unsafe about it? I’m always open to learning more…
Lindsey,
Take a look at Skin Deep’s web site
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com
and enter the diaper cream you use in the search box. This site rates products based on how safe their ingredients are. It’s quite an eye opener when you search many of the products you use, like shampoo, makeup, etc. It’s a great resource for seeing how your own products rate and then replacing them with products that have a better (lower) score if you found yours were high.
Hope this helps,
Kirstin (The Green Mommy)
