The Eco Women are celebrating their second blog anniversary this week! Check out our daily giveaways and leave comments to win prizes.
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is real food. Food that is in season. Food that did not travel thousands of miles to get to your table.

The first tomato of the season Recycla's garden, 2009
For example, there is a huge, major, vast difference between a tomato bought at the grocery store in January and one that is picked from a garden in August and then eaten while still warm from the sun. There is simply no comparison between the two. One is sublime and the other is mealy and flavorless.
The Eco Women do encourage you to think about your food carefully. Is that mealy, flavorless tomato really worth it? Why spend your money on something like that? Wait until the summer and then eat the real thing — grow it yourself or get it from your local farmers’ market. In the meantime, if your taste buds are absolutely craving Solanum lycopersicum, get your fix with a great pizza or pasta with marinara sauce.
The Eco Women aren’t saying that you have to go out and plant a quarter acre garden. They understand that not everyone has the time, space, or inclination to do so. However, if you can plant something, even if it’s just herbs in your window, then give it a try. Your taste buds will thank you.
Today, in honor of the Eco Women’s 2nd blog anniversary, we are giving away seeds so that you too can jump into gardening this spring. This sampler will include vegetable and flower seeds and everything is super easy to grow. Just leave a comment here to enter!
Tune in every day this week, as the Eco Women give away prizes to celebrate their two year blogiversary. All giveaways are open until 8 p.m. EST on Friday, March 12. Winners will be randomly chosen and contacted over the weekend.
We’ ve gotten much better at this since we moved to FL.
The local strawberries have just started hitting the markets and in the Spring we’ll go up to the blueberry farms. In the winter and Spring, we go to the citrus groves and pick our oranges and grapefruit.
I’m so so so ready to start my new gardens. Veggies, herbs, and flowers! I’ve started laying out my plans – *evil muhahaha* – my hubby is in for some major work! And the boy is already beggin for new garden tools so he can come help. It’s going to be so much fun giving him his own little plot to grow peas, carrots, and sunflowers and such.
Now…if only spring would get here!
I can taste a fresh tomato! Can’t wait until summer
Amen, sister. Still eating the garden tomatoes from last summer–and garden strawberries, pears and beans. Fresh is best, but thank goodness for preserving fresh for the off-season!
yum…we are moving, in part to have a garden…yay!
I agree! There is nothing better than having fresh grown vegetables straight from the garden. the best part this year…my kids are begging me to start the garden now.
Did you see this great TED talk by Jamie Oliver on educating children about food? I have passed it on to friends and family, and signed up for http://www.wearewhatwedo.org where I posted the action that I would like one million people to view this talk. http://www.ted.com/talks/jamie_oliver.html
Oh, also should have said Congratulations on two years! I found you because of Green Girl in Wisconsin : ) Hi there, Melissa! : )
Seeds! I’m starting to think ahead to summer; snow piles, begone! I’d love to win seeds. Or a tote bag. Either one will make me very happy.
Oh I know and the tomato is the perfect example. I can eat tomatoes off the vine, like candy out of a box. Nothing better than home-grown goodness.
Planting season isn’t too far away here in Florida – we’d put those seeds to good use!
I was just thinking of seeds the other day – while we’ve still got some snow on the ground the weekend promises a hint of the season to come! YAY!
