Captain Compost’s “To Read” list!

Captain Compost is learning more and more about her food and where it comes from and how it affects our planet.  Watching Food, Inc. was eye opening and now she has a long list of books to read to find out more!

She just started reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma and is finding it fascinating.  She also has a few other books on her reading list for this summer and wanted to share so all you Eco~Warriors out there can bone up on where your food is really coming from and what it’s really doing to our planet.  Check them out:

Michael Pollan’s newest book: Food Rules sounds fascinating, as well as In Defense of Food.  CC added them both to her PBS wish list!

Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is next on Captain Compost’s reading list.

While doing some research, CC discovered another interesting looking book: Confessions of an Eco~Sinner: Tracking Down the Sources of my Stuff which sounds fascinating as well as Sleeping Naked is Green: How and Eco~Cynic Unplugged Her Fridge, Sold Her Car, and Found Love in 366 Days.

This book looks fun, too: Don’t Throw It, Grow it!  68 Windowsill Plants from Kitchen Scraps.  CC will be adding that to her “To Read” list, too!

Captain Compost is wondering if you have read any good Green books lately?  What’s on your “To Read” list for this year?

What To Wear?

Captain Compost remembers the days when her Auntie would send over reused cardboard diaper boxes filled with hand~me~downs from her older cousin.   It felt like Christmas as she went through all the new~to~her clothes and picked out her favorite outfit in the batch to wear to school the next day.   She looked up to her older cousin and felt “cooler” knowing that she was wearing her beloved shirts, jeans and dresses.  Eventually that cousin stopped growing while CC did not and Mama Captain Compost had to buy clothes from retail stores, agonizing over when the next big sale would be so she wouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg to replenish CC’s wardrobe.

These days Captain Compost still has no one to hand down clothes to her but she does purchased recycled clothes at her favorite local thrift store and consignment store.  The higher end consignment stores in her metro area have some great finds that make Captain Compost feel like she’s on a treasure hunt as she searches the racks of formerly expensive threads.   A quick Google search gives lots of options of places to shop near by and CC recommends you check out a Consignment or Thrift store the next time you are in need of some new duds!  If you like certain brands, it’s also easy to find some great options on eBay, too.  Although you have to pay for shipping, the fact that you are adding recycled clothes to your wardrobe should make all Eco~Warriors out there feel a little less guilty about shopping!

Eco~Holidays: Greener Holiday Cards

Captain Compost has a lot of people on her list to send holiday cards to.  Friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, co~workers, etc.  It can get to be really overwhelming!  It also takes a lot out of the earth, from the trees cut down to make the paper for the cards to the gas the postal service uses to transport all those cards all over the country.

Last year the Compost Family decided to try something new.  They’d been using e~cards for birthdays for several years.  Why not try an e~Holiday card as well?  Mr. Captain Compost used some photos from the past year and merged them into a PDF document to add to the annual holiday letter that they used to update friends and family of the prior year’s activities.  It was personal and colorful and easy!  The Compost Family was able to send greetings to hundreds of people with the click of a mouse button.  No trees were injured and no stamps were purchased.  It was economical and fun!  They intend to keep up this tradition each year.

If you don’t like the idea of E~greetings, recycled holiday cards are another great option.  Although much more time consuming and hand cramping, it is a more personal way to send your holiday greetings.  Here are some that Captain Compost likes:

Cards Direct

Great Green Goods

Cards for Causes

Anne Taintor

Speak Clothing

No matter which route you go, Captain Compost and her family send their best wishes for a delightful holiday season to you and your family!

Captain Compost’s New Find!

Captain Compost lives in a climate where there is very little humidity in the air.  Because of the dry climate, her hair suffers from daily washing with shampoo and water.   CC recently discovered the joys of dry shampoo ~ which absorbs sweat, dirt and grease without water.   The brand Captain Compost tried was Hair Fix, which is reasonably priced and best of all ~ organic!  So far she is loving the effects of the water~less shampoo on her hair.

Captain Compost also loves that this smart beauty practice is also good for the environment by helping reduce her water usage as well as energy spent on heating water for a shower.  What a great product for an Eco Warrior to add to his or her stash!  CC recommends that you give this product a shot ~ or try one of the several others that show up if you do a quick Google search for “Organic dry shampoo”!

Happy Pampering :)

Captain Compost talks Costumes

captain-compost1Halloween is one of Captain Compost’s favorite holidays.  She starts thinking about costumes as soon as leaves start changing and that telltale crisp smell of fall is in the air.  CC thinks that Eco~Warriors can be green through the holidays and Halloween is one of the easiest!

Though she would like to be, Captain Compost is not the most creative of moms and has never made her kids’ costumes… though that is a great way for Eco~Warriors to celebrate the day!  How better to celebrate your child’s individuality than by making a unique costume just for him/her?  For those that like the idea of a homemade costume but like CC lack the creative juices to come up with such a thing, Captain Compost recommends Etsy.  A quick search for costumes is sure to give you loads of choices for your little ghoul or goblin!

Captain Compost loves shopping at thrift stores ~ the treasure hunt is almost more fun than the treasures she finds.  This holds true for costumes as well!  Last year, Mr. Compost found a wonderful “nerd” costume and CC dressed as Dr. Feelgood.  All parts of the costume were purchased second hand with the exception of the stethoscope which she found on eBay.  Speaking of eBay, if your local thrift store doesn’t have the options you are looking for, have no fear!  You can find tons of recycled and barely used costumes on eBay!  This year, Captain Compost and her hubby are dressing as Jack Skellington and Sally from “Nightmare Before Christmas.”  The costumes they found on eBay were worn only once or twice and the savings from buying gently used rather than new were fantastic!

Happy Halloween, Eco~Warriors!

Organic Delivery Services Make Life Easier!

Captain CompostThe Family Compost lives about 10 minutes from the nearest Target and 15 minutes from the nearest grocery store.  Although farming communities on the Colorado plains surround her, Captain Compost sometimes has a difficult time finding a good selection of local Colorado organic produce.   The Farmer’s Markets that are plentiful in her state are fantastic, but a good 35 minute drive from home… so a trip requires careful planning to avoid wasted gas and spoiled produce.  Still, Captain Compost is determined to feed her family the best food that she can.

Luckily, there are organic delivery services to help save the day!  CC has just joined the Door to Door Organics family, which serves Colorado along the Kansas City, MO area, Michigan and the East Coast.  If you live in Texas, check out Greenling.  Although it’s not local, Diamond Organics can deliver overnight anywhere in the lower 48!  If you live on the West Coast, check out Spud! Organic Delivery.   Spud! is in Canada, too!  New Yorkers can try Urban Organic or Organic Direct.   Los Angeles  has L.O.V.E. Delivery.  In Western Pennsylvania, you can get fresh from the farm goodies from The Kretschmann Organic Farm.

And don’t forget about treating that special someone in your life occasionally to fresh, organic flowers from Organic Bouquet or California Organic Flowers.

Buying local, organic fruits and vegetables does a body good.  And now, it’s more convenient than ever!  Happy Shopping! :)

Captain Compost gets Cookin’!

Captain CompostCaptain Compost recently found herself in a predicament.  That old cookware that she’d been using, with the Teflon coating, that she purchased before she was even married (over 10 years ago!!) was starting to crack and peel and little flakes were coming off in the food she was cooking.  The more she heard about how bad Teflon was, the more determined she was to find a better alternative.

She thought about using cast iron, which is a greener alternative and a product that will never need to be replaced… but the thought of lifting heavy pans, keeping them maintained and the higher purchase price led her to do a bit more research so see if there were other options out there.

When she came across Cuisinart Green Gourmet line of cookware, she started checking out the information available to see how this stood up to the Teflon and Cast Iron competition.    The downside to this line is that they are made in China.  But the good outweighed the bad, CC felt, when she learned that they are made with no petroleum and no Teflon but they are still non~stick.  They are said to work best with medium and low heat because they conduct heat so well.  They are made with anodized aluminum and have a ceramic surface for non~sticking.  Like cast iron, if treated gently, this cookware should last for a long time.  To make sure, Captain Compost recommends using wooden or plastic spoons when cooking and handwashing these most of the time.

Captain Compost received several Green Gourmet pans for Christmas and couldn’t wait to start using them.  She was happy overall with the performance of these pans.  They definitely did not flake Teflon into her food like the old ones had.  The drawback she found, however, was that the non~stick surface wasn’t quite as non~stick as she was used to.  When using regular cooking spray, some things seemed to still stick to the pan.  She noticed that when using grapeseed or olive oil, that helped immensely and now uses only those oils when sauteing and frying.  Her eggs have never tasted better!

Captain Compost does recommend this cookware, if EcoWarriors are on the hunt for something to replace old, potentially dangerous Teflon coated pans.

Captain Compost gets girly up in here!

In her quest to become ever healthier planet wise as well as body wise, Captain Compost has been doing some experimenting.  With product.  First, she samples come cool products from Ecostore.   She decided to follow Recycla’s lead and try out some Honeybee Gardens products lately and so far has liked most of what she’s tried.  CC really likes Honeybee’s prices, as well as their customer service.  Products that she’s purchased have arrived very quickly.

mascara

Although Recycla wasn’t crazy about the Truly Natural Mascara, CC was pretty happy with the product.  Being a pale, blond, the Chocolate Truffle shade was just perfect, without being overpowering, at making her blue eyes stand out.  The mascara stays put and CC hasn’t experienced the dreaded Raccoon Eyes.  So far, she’s a happy customer here.

mineral makeupNext, Captain Compost tried some samples of the Powdercolors Mineral Color for her eyes.  She wasn’t sure what colors would look best and the samples were generously sized for $.50.   She’s loving the way the color stays on her eyes and they have been a great first experience for a natural eye product!  She intends to buy more as soon as her other eye products run out.  Maybe sooner.  And in every color.  (don’t tell Mr Compost, please!)

eye shadowThe next Honeybee Gardens product that Captain Compost tried was the Shadowcolors Eye Shadow.  This product comes in a tube that is similar to some drug store products that CC has tried before.  The applicator is very handy… well, it would be if it worked.  The first product Captain Compost tried was unfortunately broken.  But wait!  Here’s where the wonderful customer service comes in!  She emailed the company and the president almost immediately replied with a replacement product on its way!  Sadly, though, the applicator in another color also ended up somewhat faulty and CC thinks she won’t be trying this product again.

Captain Compost has been noticing some organic and natural beauty products popping up at her local Target store, as well.  Burts Bees products and Alba products, which have always been winners in CC’s book has been around for awhile, but lately some new makeups have been finding their way to the shelves, too.  In the name of beauty research, Captain Compost boldly went where no other Eco Warrior had gone before and decided to sample said products so she could give her opinion on them.

almayRecently, CC found Almay’s Pure Blends on an end cap.  Not only were they being sold at a special introductory price, the eye shadow had a free complimenting color attached to it.  The color selection wasn’t very extensive, but Captain Compost is hoping there are more to come as the products gain popularity.  So far, CC likes the colors that she’s tried but they go on a little lighter than they appear to be on the package.

She will probably continue to try new colors as she notices them, and would like to try some of the other makeups as well… but she prefers the Honeybee Gardens eye shadows to these.

physicians formulaPhysicians Formula has been making Organic Wear products for over a year now and Captain Compost especially loves the 100% Natural Origin Loose Powder.  CC doesn’t wear a lot of face makeup ~ just moisturizer (with SPF!) and powder with a little blush.  She finds this powder lasts a long time and has good coverage without looking cakey.  She’s been so happy with it that she’s already on her second container!  She has heard that Physicians Formula also has a Mascara out and she is anxious to try it!  She promises to come back with a full report later.
